Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce undertakes successful Quality
Management training workshop
A full day training on issues of quality management was held on Monday
January 10, 2005 at the Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce (ECC) Conference
Hall. The workshop was designed to provide Small & Medium Enterprises
(SMEs) in Ethiopia information & training on issues of quality
management & how it can be made operational within their businesses.
The ECC is now conducting the Quality Management seminars, through its
ECC-HWK partnership project, and in conjunction with ECC member city
chambers across the country. Sessions will be held in Addis Ababa,
Bahir Dar, Mekelle, etc.

Ethiopia to take part in Aichi Intern. Expo
Ethiopia would take part in the International Expo due to be held in
Aichi town, Japan in March 2005, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
announced. Asian Affairs Head with the ministry, Addis Dilnesaw said
preparations were in progress to enable Ethiopia participate in the
six-month international expo scheduled for next March. More than 120
countries, 31 from Africa, would take part in the international expo,
he said. He added promotional activities on coffee, leather,
floriculture, cereals, oil seeds, and handicrafts of the country would
be carried out. The expo is expected to attract 15 million people
across the world.

Company exports 12,000 live animals, 2,000 tones of meat to Egypt
Takem, a Private Limited Company (PLC) disclosed that it has for the
first time exported 12,000 live animals and 2,000 tones of meat to
Egypt. Company Manager, Moges Gebremariam told Walta that the live
animals and meat were exported to Egypt following the agreements his
Company and three abattoirs entered with Haive Group, an Egyptian
company. The export is expected to earn the country more than 2
million USD in hard currency together with raising the life standard
of the pastoral community, he added.

Union Opens London Outlets
The Oromiya Coffee Farmers Cooperatives’ Union has opened three coffee
shops in London, England, with a view to popularizing Ethiopian Coffee
in the world market. The Union, in cooperation with Oxfam, opened the
coffee shops in October 2004, said Desalegn Jena, deputy manager of
the Union. The state’s coffee farmers cooperative union has a plan to
supply 5,000tn of coffee to the global market in the current year.
However, from the 1,300tn of coffee, which has so far been sold, the
Union has been able to generate 32.8 million Br.

134m Br Secured from Export
Ethiopia has secured 134 million Br in foreign exchange from the
export of hides and skins over the last three months, announced the
Ethiopian Customs Authority. The sum was obtained from the export of
4.11 quintals of hides and skins between September and November 2004.
Exports to Italy and the United Kingdom constituted 35 and 17pc
respectively among the 11 countries.

Ways to enrich
Ethiopian women entrepreneurs
A one-day training
workshop organized by the United Nation Industrial Development
Organization (UNIDO) aimed at enriching women entrepreneurs in the
country was held Wednesday, October 6, at the Imperial Hotel. The
training program entitled “Women Entrepreneurship Development
Programme” was organized to enhance trainers with more
entrepreneurship skills that will in turn help women build up their
independent revenue base, thereby improving their status in the
society.
